HISTORY OF IODE

IODE was created in 1961, almost immediately after the creation of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission in 1960.

Formally the IODE started out as a Working Group on Oceanographic Data Exchange created during the First IOC Assembly (19-27 October 1961) through Resolution I-9. The report of the first meeting of the group (1962) is available from https://oceanexpert.org/document/813.

The Working Group became a Working Committee in 1973 through Resolution VIII-31, adopted by the 8th Session of the IOC Assembly (5-17 November 1973).
A more complete historical overview of the IODE Programme between 1961 and 2003 was published in 2003 and is available from http://hdl.handle.net/1834/42304
